Hotel C, The Biggest Female Hostel In ABSU Is On Fire (See Photos)

Just a few days of resumption from the 2013 ASUU strike action, 1 of the hostels in Abia state University Uturu caught fire tonight. Though the source is unconfirmed for now, rumour has it that it’s as a result of electric spark. The hostel popularly called Adanma Okpara or Hostel C is 1 of the female hostels. I doubt if any life was lost, but properties ranging from money, books, foodstuffs, wears etc are definitely lost. So many giant rodents which ABSU hostels are known for have also been rendered homeless

Fuel Tanker Explodes In Lagos, Many Feared Dead, Scores Injured, Buildings Destroyed (PHOTOS)

A petrol tanker exploded in Olodi-Apapa area of Lagos on Tuesday, January 7, at about 10:30 p.m. The flames spread fast towards the buidlings and vehicles, destroying them. Many people were trapped in the fire, and, according to yet-to-be confirmed reports, the number of casualties is from five to fifteen. Scores sustained variuos degrees of injuries.
It was learnt that an oil barge discharging petrol at the MRS Oil and Gas tank farm jetty exploded within the Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos. The incident occurred because the vessel offloading product, premium motor spirit (PMS), into MRS tank farm was improperly handled: the 33,000L tanker lost control and somersaulted after brakes failure, causing a massive explosion.
Scroll down to watch the video from the scene of the explosion
Certain safety precautions that were not observed by the MRS workers who offloaded the product from the barge may have triggered the explosion.
Business activities in the neighborhood had to stop when glass doors and windows of buildings in the vicinity
were shattered by the explosion. People within two kilometers radius had to flee the area. Eyewitnesses say some traders came at night to the scene to see if they could save their goods which were stored in the burning shops.
The administrative building of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ports and Cargo complex, and a branch of First Bank were also affected.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were alerted and activated all their respective rescue units. Firefighting vehicles belonging to Integrated Oil Services and the Lagos State Fire Service were also seen at the scene of the explosion. Tugboats were used to tame the raging inferno.
The injured are now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
As a result of the explosion loading of fuel suffered a setback in Lagos on Wednesday. The explosion led all fuel depots in Apapa to immediately halt fuel loading as a safety measure.
Apapa is the hub of fuel tank farms and seat of two biggest sea ports in Nigeria.
We are constantly updating the news.

Open Letter To President Jonathan, By Citizen Balogun (Must Read)

Dear Sir,
I am writing on behalf of the deprived, dehumanized, hapless and traumatized poor people of Nigeria to express to you their disgruntled impressions about your government. Sir, your (s)election or ascendancy to the presidency of a castrated nation was by providence. Personally, I believe you ought to pounce on that privilege to make history. It has been argued as well in some quarters that you are a child of circumstances; that your political and academic nomenclatures do not commensurate with the mundane position you currently hold. I stand to disagree with your critics including this writer that nothing good can come out of your government. I strongly believe you still have ample time to act presidential. History of the world is very repetitious. And history taught us that good things evolve from least expected situation and circumstances. The events of the past few months are litmus tests that the country under your closed watch and power is under attack and on the brink of disaster.
I am dwarfed to suggest to you sir, what to do with the power in your hands but as a concerned citizen trying to sensitize you on behalf of a milked nation, it is my responsibility and our collective task to salvage the nation together from the impending doom looming over us. We are fast becoming a pariah nation and a safe haven for act of terrorism.
Sir, presently, you have a golden opportunity to turn the country around in a drastic and dramatic ways if only you act decisively. As the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria, the buck stops on your table to right the wrongs currently plaguing the country.
The whole world is watching with keen interest the menace and insurgence of religion fanatics known at home as Boko Haram and in the  international community as terrorists. And as you also watch nonchalantly or helplessly the pillaging of the country resources by a few cabals at the helm of affairs of the country, you have the onerous responsibility, the will and power within your disposal to stop them. Just to remind you sir, your  good citizens,  who are professionals abroad hold enviable government and non governmental positions across the globe contributing positively to development of other countries. In fact, a country where this writer resides is a classic example of one of these countries. We are a nation blessed with abundant human and material resources. Nigerians in the Diaspora are willing to come home to contribute their individual and collective quotas to the socio-economic and political development of the country if your government creates a conducive and secured environment.
In a nutshell, much has been said through symposia, letters, lectures and agitations by people in the country, but what can you do to salvage the country before these concerns translate into total revolt?  The answers are not far fetched. Sir, firstly, the negative impression of Nigerians about their rulers should be a concern to your humble self as there is a total disconnect from the needs of the people. Corruption needs to be killed and the corrupt politicians need to be brought to book, ostracized, rejected and excommunicated from our body polity. According to a recent reports, more than 500 billion dollars of accrued money from exportation of crude oil in the country have either been mismanaged or embezzled by the successive military and civilian governments of Nigeria through chronic corruption in the last 50years of nationhood.
One school of thought believed that Nigeria required revolutionary violence to throw off the shackles of its current and corrupt past in order to attain true federalism and egalitarian society. I hesitate to support this notion because those who had witnessed wars would tell you that it is easy to start a violence as it is difficult to end it. Syria, Western Sudan and Central African Republic are ugly examples of what can happen in Nigeria. You can initiate a peaceful revolution now in order to prevent a violent one. You can mobilize your cohorts in power and past leaders by apologizing to all Nigerians for these socio-economic and political crimes that have been committed against the country.
General Olusegun Obasanjo, your political godfather who conscripted you to polity and this enviable but difficult position is as guilty as you  are in his message to you through his celebrated missive.  He understands your SWOT  (strength, weakness, opportunity and threat). He is using your weakness now as existential  threat to your government . You should note that he is a political persona who relishes in political opportunism and attention seeking.
Your predecessors – Olusegun Obasanjo and Yar’Adua missed  golden opportunities when they set up a similar version of South African’s truth and reconciliation commission to correct the wrongs of the past, because of lack of sincerity on their parts, the reports of the commissions were dumped into the dustbin of Nigerian history.
We have drifted from a prosperous nation to a failed and perilous state due to the hedonistic and a cancerous corruption that have eaten deeper into the fabric of the system. You have the onerous responsibility and power to save the nation after all, Nigeria is a forgiving nation and one of the easiest nations on earth to rule. When you start to do this, I can guarantee you that other positive things will start to fall in place. You will be positively placed on the good side of history.
Secondly, discountenance your being seen as a naive, incapable, clueless and inexperienced leader. Consult with the brightest among your citizens at home and abroad, while doing that, beware of political jobbers; have an eye with praise singers; come not near corrupt political associates with the tendency to distract your focus because they do not love you to make history. Send concise and comprehensive bills to the National Assembly to tackle corruption,  I vehemently believe that bad leadership and corruption are intertwined, they are the hydra-headed mantra plaguing the country and also the diseases corroding the system. There is nothing wrong with the entity called Nigeria. Unless, these  two monsters are expunged from the system, the country will continue to see underdevelopment and insecurity under your administration.
It should be added that corruption is a menace that hinder progress and the provision of basic necessity of life such as security, power, roads, transportation, education for the citizenry. People are suffering in Nigeria with the nonchalant attitudes of their leaders to provide the basic necessities of life. You should urgently do something to alleviate the suffering of the people. There is no justification for people to wallow in abject poverty in the midst of plenty.
The reason why people seek elective positions in a civilized society is to serve and the current political office holders in Nigeria pompously “do not give a damn” to serve the masses that elected them. They violate their constitutional responsibilities and duties to uphold the constitution (our sacred document) – the constitution that is supposed to circumscribe our set of rules as a nation; they seem to have misplaced their priorities.
Before 2015, Mr. President with posterity’s sake you should use your exalted office to take urgent cognizance of needs of the people and rewrite your administration in the good book of the deprived Nigerians.  Again, you should beware of political jobbers and any government in power; take heed of godfathers; come not near religious zealots; and have an eye with political prostitutes. They all love thee not. It is not too late for your administration to make history. Once , Nigerians start seeing the  dividends of your government in their lives, I bet, you will not only be making history in this purported “wasted generation” but rewriting Nigeria ugly history with hopes and aspirations. A stitch in time saves nine! “It is not too late”.
God bless you sir, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Yours Sincerely,
Yahaya Balogun.

Why People Accused Me Of Being Gay —Nollywood Actor Benson Okonkwo (Must Read)

Tall, well-built and handsome, Benson Okonkwo a.k.a ‘Mr Packaging’ is riding the crest of success in Nollywood amidst rumours that he is gay. In this engaging interview with Showtime Celebrity, the soft-spoken actor speaks out on his gay story, journey to prominence and much-touted romance with actress,  Nkiru Sylvanus…Enjoy!!!
As a ladies’ man, have you ever been threatened for any reason?
Yes. Some weeks ago, an unknown  lady walked up to my security guard and left a note with him. She warned me to step down for her boyfriend who was a strong contender in the just-concluded City People’s Face of Nollywood award.  She didn’t stop there, as  she kept calling me and warning that if I didn’t step down, she would deal with me.
Why do you like to be called a ladies’ man?
Why not? I’ve got all it takes to be a ladies’ man.  I am hot, I am a head-turner anywhere I go. But it is not all ladies that say “hello” to you  that you respond to. This is because I have a girlfriend I am seriously in love  with. I believe one is enough.

What inspired you to go into acting?
I love acting and usually acted for my siblings when I was growing up. It was my mother who advised me to get  registered with the Actors Guild of Nigeria. Later, I registered with the Enugu State chapter of the guild when late Pete Eneh was the chairman.  My mother even provided the money with which I registered. That was how I started my acting career.
Does it mean you didn’t set out to become an actor?
I have always known that I’m good looking.  I have all it takes to be a model as well as an actor, but my mum introduced me to the trade. And so far, so good, I am not regretting it.
What’s your reaction to the issue of  sexual harassment in Nollywood, considering that you were once accused of being gay?
Sexual harassment is everywhere, even in the banking sector. Thank God  I have not been sexually harassed before now. It is not about how many producers or directors you sleep with. What matters is if you are talented. You can sleep with everybody without being able to deliver. But if you are good and God is by your side, you can go places. Actually, a colleague of mine was the brain behind the gay rumour.  They feel threatened because of my good looks.
Have you ever been approached sexually by the same sex?
Not at all. It has never happened to me.
Are you saying homosexuality does not exist in Nollywood?
I don’t know if it exists, but I have not experienced it before in the industry – although I have been harassed sexually outside the industry. When they approached me, I simply rejected their request, telling them they met the wrong person. I might look like a gay man, but I’m not.  Interestingly, I try to convert them to become  my friends whenever they approach me.
How many movies have you starred in so far?
I have starred in not less than 30 movies and it’s still counting.
Of all the movies, which would you consider most challenging?
The movie I did with Ifeanyi Onyeabor which is yet to be released. The movie is titled, “Games Town” starring myself, Mama G and many other stars. I sustained an injury while on location.  I fell off the bus while playing  a kidnapping scene. In the movie, I kidnapped Kenneth Albert, and had to  jump with him from the bus. Unfortunately, the location driver suddenly zoomed off, leading to my  falling flat and rolling on the ground.  I was really injured in the process.
Did you actually date Chika Agu?
Chika Agu is very close to me as a colleague. I didn’t date her and cannot date her. She is like a sister to me. My mother knows her very well and  we even attended her mum’s burial rites.  I didn’t date Chika.
There was a picture where both of you were cuddling in a pool. Was it a movie scene?
There is nothing attached to that. The picture was taken when I attended her mother’s funeral rites at her village. We  visited their village stream. I was just trying to cheer her up. She was wearing her top, and I was wearing my singlet and shorts.  There is nothing passionate in the picture.
What is Nkiru Sylvanus to you?
I met  Nkiru Sylvanus in 2008. That was on the set of a movie directed by Theodore Anyaji. The movie was titled, “Agency”. While we were shooting the movie, she was nice to me. She is a wonderful actress with a heart of gold. I have worked with so many Nollywood stars but Nkiru is different. She has always been there, supporting my career in any little way she could. I appreciate her so much for always being there for me. She is like my “Madam”. I love her acting prowess.
Is it true that she likes young actors?
I’m not aware of it. I am just hearing that for the first time.
What’s the secret behind your charming looks?
I started my career as a model, so I  have always liked to look good. Even in Nollywood, I am known for my dress sense. That’s why I’m called  “Benson Mr. Packaging”. My fans also love me because of the way I dress. I am crazy when it comes clothes. I also like to combine colours well. I have always loved fashion and inherited the attribute from my mother.

Benson Okonkwo
What has fashion done for you?
It has given me fame and so many roles in movies. Because I costume myself, most times the costumiers recommend me to directors. It has taken me places and also makes me stand out.
How did you make the City People nomination for the ‘Face of Nollywood’ award?
I got an email telling me I had been nominated for the Face of Nollywood award alongside Uti Nwachukwu, Kenneth Okoli, Walter Anger, and many others. When I got the mail, I promised myself I was going to do a lot of campaigning to emerge the winner. I thank God that people know I am good at what I do. I wish I had won the award.
Which of your works do you think gave you the nomination?
I don’t know, but I would mention movies such as “No Man’s Land”, “Wicked Uncle” and “My World.”
When you heard of the ‘Sexiest in Nollywood’ contest, what came to your mind?
As I told you before, I know I am hot and a head turner. I was not surprised. I knew it was one of those things I deserved as an actor. I said “thank God that Vanguard has decided to recognise Nollywood.”
The first edition was won by Jim Iyke, while Desmond Elliot bagged the second and the third edition is gearing up. With big names like Ramsey Noah, what do you think are your chances of winning the contest?
I am among the top 22 contestants. I know I will go far. I also thank my fans for their votes. I’m  thinking  about my chances, but I want to win.
What is sexy about you?
I’ve got a charming smile, great height, romantic eyes and good posture.  I am a head turner anywhere I go.
How do you keep yourself the way you are?
I don’t really work out much because I am always on set. But  I’m always very conscious of my diet.
Before you came into the movie industry, would you say you had a crush on anyone?
(Laughs) No comment.
If you had the chance to pick one actress to spend a lonely night with, who would that be?
(Laughs) No comment.
What are you working on presently?
I am working on a movie and my saloon. The most recent movie is a Christian movie I did with James Onyeakpor and it will soon be out.
How is the pay like in Nollywood?
When we started newly, we were paid depending on scenes and the number of times we made appearances. A scene was about N1,200 and really not worth the stress. But we did that because of the passion we had for the profession. I thank God the pay has improved now. I know that with time, it will be much better.
Who is the woman in your life?
She’s called Emerald. We’ve dated for about 9 years now, and I love her so much. I met  her during my secondary school days. I plan to marry her as soon as I’m financially alright. She understands and knows one or two things about me.

“Iyanya’s New Single ‘Away’ Is Completely Wack”- Eze Blinks

According. To Mikel Obi’s Younger Brother Eze Blinks,He Said The Kukere master — Iyanya‘s second album ’Iyanya Vs Desire‘ was very successful; and drove nightclubs in Nigeria and all over the world crazy with various club hit singles.

However, Iyanya might have started the new year — 2014 on a bad note as in an attempt to topple his last effort, the Pop star seems to be going down the wrong road.

His late last year released single ’Le kwa ukwu‘ sounds like it was forced and now critics reviewed his latest official second single ‘Away‘ and say the song sounds even worse and totally wack.

Critics say that the ‘Away‘ concept steals from ‘Le kwa ukwu‘ and then producer MasterKraft lazily samples the rhythmic progression from a previous production (Banky W‘s ‘Jasi‘).

They further trash Iyanya even more with this — An advice: Stop wasting time forcing yourself, trying to recreate the previous sounds and be more creative (we won’t even bother if your lyrics don’t make sense). And there’s always DeeTunes you can go back to…

If you haven’t heard the song yet, go and find it and listen; no be my mouth you go hear say coke bottle no full!!

Strike: ASUP accuses FG of abandoning polytechnic education

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has alleged abandonment by the Federal Government as the strike declared by lecturers in the sub-sector enters its seventh month.
ASUP had gone on strike April 17, 2013, to press home demands for government’s proper funding of polytechnic education as well as address the disparity between the polytechnics and university graduates in the country.
ASUP president laments
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Vanguard, National President of ASUP, Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha, lamented that the government was killing polytechnic education in Nigeria as several meetings held with government to ensure re-opening of polytechnics yielded no fruits.
Asomugha argued that the lack of interest by government to implement its promises for polytechnics to be re-opened was a deliberate ploy to deny students of Polytechnics access to education.
Expressing concern that efforts to draw the attention of the Nigerian public might be given political colouration and union leaders branded as working for opposition political parties against the government, Asomugha appealed to all relevant stakeholders to intervene on behalf of the poor students who might not have somebody in government to speak for them.
Lack of interest from FG
On why government has not shown interest in the lingering strike, the ASUP boss appealed to relevant stakeholders to prevail on the government, Minister of Education, Permanent Secretary and Minister of Labour to do the needful.
He said: “I am not going to be talking for government, we have been in this, they have given us promises, they have not been fulfilling them.
“The promises were simple things, we even had the understanding where they promised to implement within one week and it is more than four months now, everybody should reach government and let them tell Nigerians what are the problems. I cannot be speaking for government, what I know is that government is not doing any thing.
“We met them yesterday (Monday), the same promises and I don’t know why they find it difficult to fulfil the promises. Okay tell me yourself, what is the problem in releasing the White Paper that is ready? It is the government that should tells us that. The SGF should tell us why he is withholding the White Paper.”
Way out of logjam
On the way out of the long strike, he said: “The way out is that we are still on strike until the members tell us whatever they decide with the strike.
“Government has been giving assurances in the past six months, the assurance of government does not amount to anything, that is why ASUU insisted on things concrete and people didn’t understand it.
“We agreed with government that they were going to take up four things out of the 13 that we had listed. Government has been able to meet one and half of those issues that we had listed. Even the NEEDS Assessment government constituted Committee is not working at the pace it should work, we are supposed to submit the report in February, up till now, we have not done much.
Waiting on government’s White Paper
“Government said it was going to release the White Paper on the visitation to Federal Polytechnics, they were going to complete the lower cader of CONTISS 16 which was the thing that happened in 2009 and up till now, it hadn’t been implemented and then, that they were going to complete the appointment of six Governing Councils of six Federal Polytechnics which they have done.
“To constitute the NEEDS Assessment Committee to do the NEEDS assessments of the Polytechnics, which they have constituted and the Committee is more or less not working the way it should work. These are the four issues that we extracted out of the 13.
“There is a director in the Ministry of Education who is the Chairman of the Committee but the problem is that the Committee complains all the time of lack of funding from TETFund which is supposed to fund it.”

Final year female Benue varsity student dies in hotel room

A 21-year-old final year female student of the Benue State University, BSU, Joan Adaaku, has been reportedly found dead in a hotel room located in the heart of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
Vanguard gathered from sources who preferred anonymity that the Economics undergraduate  had checked into Savannah Guest House at about 7 a.m after paying N2,000 for a room
According to the source, “She actually  arrived the hotel alone and after underaking some check-in formalities she entered the room and locked herself up.
“She never came out of her room again either to ask for food or any other things. So, at exactly 6 p.m, a room attendant knocked on her door to find out if she was interest in being attended to by room service.
“Her silence aroused suspicion and the room  attendant, who repeated his call to the room at 8pm without reply, alerted the manager on duty.
“It was at that point that the management alerted the Police who moved in and broke into the room and discovered the lifeless body of the lady in a position that suggested she was making a call before her death.
Vanguard gathered that the deceased had on her a small purse which contained a Bible, rosary and N8,200. A bottle of water and a bottle of soft drink were also discovered in the room.
Contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent, DSP, Daniel Ezeala who confirmed the incident said investigation into the matter had commenced.

Half-nude women protest against Shell in Bayelsa

Hundreds of half-nude women in Peremabiri community in Bayelsa State, Niger Delta, yesterday, staged a protest against non-implementation of an existing agreement by Shell.
The women disrupted movement of workers into the oil platforms and boat houses operated by Shell in the area, alleging non-implementation of the memorandum of understanding Shell entered into with the community.
The protesting women tied red cloth to block the entrance to the oil platform located within the community.
They further alleged that Shell had failed to redeem the two-year-old promise to replace a faulty community generator, renovate existing community school and provide potable water for its host community.
Some of the women carried placards with various inscriptions such as “Shell: Give us Light”, “Implement MoU or go”, “We need water, Light, School for our children” among others.
The protesters claimed that the oil firm had adopted delay tactics to avoid providing the amenities which they said were time-bound.
Reacting to the development, the spokesman for Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, Precious Okolobo, urged the aggrieved women to adopt the spelt-out channel of addressing their grievances.
“The SPDC has continued to work with the Peremabiri community on the implementation of the MoU in their area. The MoU model has provision for addressing grievances.”
On the broken down generator at Peremabiri, Okolobo said SPDC procured a new set that is being transported to the area for installation and commissioning.
He said the set was twice the capacity of the bad one, and would be commissioned as soon as possible.
“The Bayelsa State Government and MoU Cluster Development Board are aware of the situation and are engaging the Community Development Committee,” Okolobo said.
Nigeria is one of the world’s major oil producers, but the oil- producing Niger Delta region remains one of the country’s poorest and least developed regions.
